Support the Whitin Community Center

For over ninety years, the Whitin Community Center trustees, corporators, staff, members, donors, and volunteers have been steadily building community in the Blackstone Valley by providing comprehensive fitness and recreational programming, outreach programs, and community support. The Whitin Community Center is a non-profit, 501(c)(3) organization.

Enthusiastically embraced by the public since 1922, the Whitin Community Center (aka George Marston Whitin Memorial Community Association, Inc.) is indeed a local treasure for families, youth, young adults, and seniors alike. The WCC remains the most comprehensive fitness and recreational facility for all ages, fitness levels, and socio-economic backgrounds in the Blackstone Valley. An active participant in the community, the Whitin Community Center established and operates a youth outreach program, provides community support to local and regional organizations, and supports many annual community events. These programs and efforts to benefit our community are funded entirely by donations. The Whitin Community Center does not receive financial support from the town, state or federal levels.

MISSION: The Whitin Community Center is committed to enhancing the health and well-being of individuals and families and to building a strong community in the Blackstone Valley.

Participating, by joining, giving, and volunteering, is very rewarding. Not only do you and your community benefit directly, you are contributing to the advancement of a vibrant and vital community organization, devoted to the health and well-being of its community members.

Be part of the vision.                          Be part of the community

Your generous fully tax-deductible gifts to the Annual Operating Fund serve as the primary means of raising unrestricted dollars for the Whitin Community Center’s, annual operating budget, and individual donors continue to provide the most reliable and significant source of that support. Your gifts provide critical support of the Whitin Community Center’s core mission activities including youth outreach programming, special events open to the community, Camp Whitin camperships, and affordable membership rates. Our donors make it possible for us to welcome members of the Blackstone Valley community to participate in a wealth of healthy living activities.

Gifts to the Operating Fund are a great way to honor or memorialize a loved one or to commemorate a special occasion.

Corporate Matching Gifts double, sometimes triple your gift. Many corporations have matching gift programs for their employees, retirees, and board members that will double and, in some cases triple the portion of your gift that is tax- deductible. Contact your employer for details.

This extra support is very much appreciated.

Special project support and sponsorships are a strategic way to support the Whitin Community Center and advance your values or particular interests at the same time. These gifts help maintain the Whitin Community Center as a community leader and provide increased access to its programming.

Sponsorships can bring special programming to the Whitin Community Center and the Greater Blackstone Valley region.

Sponsorships also offer significant marketing opportunities as they are among the most publicized. Sponsors receive prominent exposure and credit before, during, and after the run of an event. Although custom packages can be developed, typical recognition includes the following:

  • Event signage
  • Credit in all event and program materials
  • Sponsor presence at event
  • Recognition on WCC website, press releases, and at the Annual Meeting.
Consider Funding a One-time or Annual Event
  • Tanglewood in Whitin Park
  • Halloween Weekend Events
  • Free Community Events: Kids Fair, Eggstravaganza, Visit with Santa Claus
    Partner with our Outreach Efforts:
  • Free Saturday Afternoon Fitness & Fun
  • Mentoring Partnership
  • Summer Youth Theatre
  • Rockdale Youth Center

Planned Giving

The Legacy: The idea of a community center in the Blackstone Valley originated in 1922 when George Marston Whitin’s four daughters donated the land and money to build a community center for the region. Since that time, countless gifts from individuals, corporations, foundations, and government agencies have brought the Whitin Community Center to its respected position as an institution offering the highest quality of fitness, recreation, and child care to the Greater Blackstone Valley region. Over its 90-plus-year history, many donors have found it appropriate to remember the George Marston Whitin Memorial Community Association, Inc. in their wills or trusts or otherwise to make a planned gift.

The Society of Sentinels: The Board of Trustees formed The Society of Sentinels to honor those who have included gifts to the Whitin Community Center in their estate plans, and to encourage others to do so.

Membership in The Society of Sentinels is open to any person or couple who has:
  • Funded a charitable gift annuity, a pooled income fund agreement, a charitable remainder annuity trust, a charitable remainder unitrust, a life insurance policy or retirement plan that designates the George Marston Whitin Memorial Community Association, Inc. as a charitable beneficiary;
  • Named the George Marston Whitin Memorial Community Association, Inc. as charitable beneficiary of an IRA, a qualified pension plan, or a life insurance policy; and/or
  • Included a bequest to the George Marston Whitin Memorial Community Association, Inc. in his or her will.

In appreciation, legacy members are acknowledged on the donor board in the front lobby.
