Historic Paint Restoration Of The Gardeners’ Shed

Thank you to Gadoury Homes, LLC!
The Whitin Community Center (WCC) is pleased to announce that the paint restoration is complete! The building referred to as the “Tennis Shack” originally known as the Gardeners’ Shed, located in Whitin Park, has undergone an extensive historic paint restoration over the past few weeks. The project was donated and completed by the skillful and expert hands of Gadoury Homes, LLC. Its architecture recalls an earlier time and is an important feature of Whitin Park that tells the story of the Victorian gardens. This building is the only remaining original building left from the John C. Whitin estate (circa 1875) on the property. The 11 acre estate of the founder of the Whitin Machine Works was developed in the 1870s as a gift to Whitin's second wife, Sarah Elizabeth Pratt. On the northern border of the estate, High Street, there was a large glass greenhouse constructed. Below the greenhouse, the land was terraced flat to accommodate a large formal garden. Many specimens grown in the greenhouse were transplanted into the formal gardens. Built into the foot of this garden area was a simple building - commonly referred to as a Gardeners’ Shed. The Gardener’s Shed was once adjacent to tiered flowerbeds and an award-winning greenhouse that produced orchids year-round.
When the estate was closed and the mansion was torn down in 1943, the land was deeded to the Whitin Community Center. It was then the Trustees of the WCC discussed how the newly acquired 7.5 acres of the "upper estate" could be utilized toward our mission to support the health and well-being of individuals and families and to building a strong community in the Blackstone Valley. The entire parcel of land was on a hillside, rising some 75 feet in elevation that made the land unsuitable for sports such as baseball, football, or soccer. There was one flat area, however, the former formal garden, and it was decided to build 3 tennis courts across the expanse. In 1945, the Gardeners’ Shed was retained, and was put to new use as the Tennis Shack where players could assemble before their matches on one of three courts above the building. This building now stores our tennis equipment and materials needed for our park fundraising events.
Thanks to the dedicated work of our Board of Trustee member, and owner of Gadoury Homes, LLC, Norman Gadoury and his team, the building has been painted to its original grandeur. The Tennis Shack will now be able to be enjoyed and used for generations to come.

The Monthly Mission - Live Your Best Life

Spring Cleaning Edition
Which came first – the clutter or the stress? Whether the clutter is in our minds, or in our environments, the stress we feel when we encounter it results in more stress and less ability to manage the clutter, which often means more… well, you know… clutter & stress, and both are unhealthy. However, if we set one goal, taking consistent small steps to reach that goal every day, we begin to feel more in control. Our Monthly Mission for this spring is to encourage you to tackle that one thing- set that one goal- take those steps, and release the clutter and the stress.
"Identify the habit or change you want to make, then replace it with the opposite. Example: Watching TV at night for two hours. Swap that TV time for stretching or a walk. Look at your day and habits to see where you can make a change. Stick with it until the change becomes the new habit" - Terri M. Owner of Herbs Make Scents
"1. Honor my body's preference for at least 7 hours of sleep each night. 2. Over 20 years ago I started rising at 5 am to meet a walking partner for a brisk 45 minute walk 4 days a week. The fresh air and camaraderie help to start my day on a positive note. ? 3. Five years ago I added two yoga classes each week. Yoga has strengthened my mobility and balance and brought a sense of mindfulness to my days." - Emily M. Beginning Bridges CFCE

Competition Pool Shutdown

April 22 - May 12
The Competition Pool will be closed from April 22 - May 12 for scheduled maintenance. During this time, multiple contractors will be working simultaneously to install a new HVAC System to improve air quality and repair the damage to the Competition Pool roof and facade that incurred during a previous storm. Additionally, we will also be draining the pool, cleaning, and painting as part of our yearly maintenance so as to not close the pool for a second time during the Summer. We must close for the safety of the workers, staff and our customers.
We appreciate your understanding and value your continued support of the Whitin Community Center. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and have identified and secured other alternative options for your swimming needs. Please view the PDF below or contact the Member Services Desk or visit our website for details and accommodations.
